The Neon Kid Tells us about her

"Definition of Chey.N"

By Natalie Perez

Chey.NBorn January 18th, 1986, Cheryse Nicol Pickens, also known as, Chey N was destined and determined to become a star! Having her entire life revolve around entertainment and performing arts brought Chey N fame and glory. Chey N began dancing at 3 years old wobbling around the place in a tutu that was half her size. Dancing for her has been a profession that she's been doing for the passed 18 years and has yet to stop. Running out in public trying to grab peoples attention got her face and name known. She was debuted to television by castings in shows such as All My Children, Les Miserables, Nickelodeon, 20/20, and others.

After fulfilling her early lifestyle she expanded her horizons and went into signing. By this being her ultimate passion she became excited whenever it came across her mind. Getting her first deal, at only 14 years old, with Krizza Muzic, the height of her pop explosion was soaring instantly. Softly molded into a tiny version of Britney Spears, this didn't go well with her mom who always made her wear clothes, and appear fully dressed at all times. Over the next two years she danced around once again after turning 16 and began break dancing. She started going out touring in Philly, and while doing so was approached by an A&R from Whyide Chylde’s label, whom later influenced her on how to turn her poetry into song writing. Five years down the line has brought this singing pop diva to becoming the next levels of Janet Jackson and Gwen Stefani. Getting her musical talent and skills to as many people and building up a fan base is one of her main goals.

During an interview conducted with the lovely artist, I had asked her about the symbolism of her name, she responded, "Haha. . .I hate to disappoint but there's not much hidden symbolism here! People love to call me Cheyenne for some reason so I guess I should clear it up . . . haha. Really my government name is Cheryse Nicol so Chey has always been my nickname. And when I was a kid I went by my middle name which is Nicol. So it was important for me, to kind of keep that with me always so I became Chey (dot)N. I suppose it’s one of those cliché types of scenarios, "never forget where you've come from" moments isn’t it!

Next I had ask do you feel you are portraying a message to the masses that we can all relate to?

"Hmm, well I write about my life. My greatest hope would be that in my own experiences other people might find a common thread. When I have fans hit me and say that they really love a song because they've been through it or that my music gives them strength, inspiration, confidence...it’s amazing and kind of surreal. To touch peoples’ lives that way... man... that can be a really heavy thing. I see how people can fall apart under the pressure. But at the end of the day I always knew that I wanted to touch people with music and that is why I chose this life...So that’s the long answer. Short answer...yes!"

Do you have any favorite tracks released off of any of your albums?

"I know my team is reading this laughing. I am NOTORIOUS for hating my music once it’s out. That’s always been a character thing for me. I'm in this rush to be the best so once I put out a project I'm like fuck this old shit! My next album’s about to be "cuuurazzy" in which point my people will be like easy Chey you just dropped your album yesterday son... But I have to say "Tell Em Again" featuring Charlie Sloth, off the "Definition", is probably my favorite at the moment and "Moi Et Toi". Shout to Lecs and the Dumpe Fresh Fam!"

How would you feel if you were to switch lives with someone for 24 hours?

"It'd be really gnarly to be Basquiat for a day. Any sort of artistic/tragic genius fascinates me. I'd definitely want to see life through someone else’s mind who is as flawed as they are gifted. I would never want to be a hero or any type of religious martyr. That would be way too intense."

Emotions come in all sizes and packages, so how does it pertain to Chey N?

"Music is everything. I see my entire life and all my emotions through music. It has helped me create some sick stuff but it can also be overwhelming... Only because when I'm up everything I make is dope but when I'm down everything else sucks too. I bounce back and forth between writing and playing. Like sometimes I have nothing but lyrics in my head and then other times I couldn’t write if I tried but I can play and make beats all day. But it’s always either or... there’s never a time where I don’t have some type of music in my head."

Who wouldn’t want to have music stuck in their head anyway it helps it get through our everyday problems, in some cases some that may just want you to say screw it all and stop, Chey N says "I love, love, love being on the road because I'm such a nomad. I HATE being home, I feel trapped when I'm not travelling. The only time a tour gets too be too much is if I'm wearing too many hats which I tend to do when I have my control freak moments. Then its like I'm fighting with promoters, I'm booking venues, organizing sound checks and rehearsals then by the time I get on stage I'm like ahh! This gets me even pissier because performing is my favorite thing to do! I hate when I leave a show feeling like what the hell just happened, I can’t even remember the experience because my mind was wrapped up in so many other things."

Chey N, just wrapping it up, how was your Halloween? And to go along with the dark holiday, what are your thoughts on death?

: "Super lame this year! I did nothing except watch the entire Omen trilogy, Resident Evil and Jeepers Creepers until I was scared out of my pants. And Yes, I don’t think anything ever really dies. Just transfers to a different state."

Overall Chey N brought forth answers that were unique and opened minded as well as brought ideas that run through all of us. So be sure to check out her debut "The Definition of Chey N," out now for your listening pleasure. This introduces us into the famous singer/dancer she is known to be today.
